2. The only possible link was the use of thimerosal as a preservative

It's a mercury derivative and was used as a preservative for multidose bottles of vaccine. It was taken out of vaccines for babies and children years ago. It also was used as a preservative in contact lens solutions and caused significant allergic reactions in some people causing a cobblestone-like appearance inside the eyelids with itching and swelling. It was taken out of those solutions years ago.
