The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will study whether vaccines cause autism, despite numerous existing studies already showing there is no link.
HHS spokesman Andrew Nixon confirmed the effort in a statement overnight, saying the agency plans to leave "no stone unturned."
"As President Trump said in his Joint Address to Congress, the rate of autism in American children has skyrocketed. CDC will leave no stone unturned in its mission to figure out what exactly is happening, the statement said. The American people expect high quality research and transparency and that is what CDC is delivering."
Nixon did not answer questions about how the study would be conducted and how it would be different from the numerous peer-reviewed studies already published.

(11,143 posts)We can thank Andrew Wakefield for the bullshit article that started the myth that the MMR vaccine caused autism. His speculation in the Lancet might as well have been on the link between peanut butter and autism. (Doncha know that 90% of autistic children consumed peanut butter some time in the 2 years prior to diagnosis? Case closed. P-butter causes autism.)

(1,005 posts)It's a mercury derivative and was used as a preservative for multidose bottles of vaccine. It was taken out of vaccines for babies and children years ago. It also was used as a preservative in contact lens solutions and caused significant allergic reactions in some people causing a cobblestone-like appearance inside the eyelids with itching and swelling. It was taken out of those solutions years ago.

(49,809 posts)in vaccines and other medications were implicated in autism. I don't know how strong that accusation/correlation was. But they did remove a lot of them. Don't know what's the causal factor these days.

(13,129 posts)Translation: We will take millions of dollars away from legitimate research programs to give RFK Jr., who told Congress he was not "anti-vax," something -- anything -- no matter how flakey the source -- he can use to pull everything off the shelf and replace them with "natural remedies" like rooby-doop root. (not a real plant)
We've already seen his response to the rapidly growing measles outbreak in Texas: "Shit happens."
I feel sad for the children who will suffer -- and in some cases die -- because their MAGA parents joined the cult of Trump. Their parents will blame Joe Biden and the Democrats because that's who they have been told is responsible for their child's suffering or death.

(12,549 posts)There has been some research into a possible link between the food a pregnant woman eats, as in highly processed and containing chemicals, and autism. More such research needs to be done because we definitely do not have the safest food in the world. For example, the US has the 4th highest autism rate per capita at 603.38 while Turkey, a country where fresh instead of processed food is the tradition, has one of the lowest rates at 286.62. Why arent we studying the connections between food and autism instead of redoing studies thar have shown no connection of vaccines to autism! Were firing workers to spend money in useless research.
