6. The self-coronation of Napoleon.

Napoleon Bonaparte famously crowned himself Emperor of the French on December 2, 1804, in a grand ceremony at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, rather than having Pope Pius VII place the crown on his head. This act symbolized that his authority came from himself and the people, not from the Church, asserting political power over the Pope. He then crowned his wife, Josephine, as Empress.
Symbolic gesture: By placing the crown on his own head, Napoleon demonstrated his power and authority as a self-made ruler. This broke with centuries of tradition where monarchs were traditionally crowned by the Pope.
Legitimizing his rule: The coronation was a political statement designed to legitimize his rule, establish a new imperial dynasty, and show his power to both the French people and other European powers.
A new kind of monarchy: The ceremony was a blend of traditional and revolutionary elements, including an oath to uphold the gains of the French Revolution, such as political and civil liberties.
The location: The event took place at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, a departure from the traditional coronation site of Reims Cathedral.
The artwork: The scene was famously immortalized in the painting The Coronation of Napoleon by the artist Jacques-Louis David.
