(2,312 posts)Farmers are not a significant voting bloc and are no more or less likely to vote Republican than any other group of business owners. I every farmers started voting Democratic it wouldn't change the results of elections, even in rural districts. Here, in a very conservative farming area there are about 300 growers - farm owners - and 40-45% of them vote Democratic. Yet Trump got over 10,000 votes here.
It is the eaters that will suffer when farms are hurt and Trump will bail out the big farm owners, especially the large grain operations, the cattle ranchers, and the meat packing industry.
Trump and the Republicans are expert at invoking rugged individualist imagery, Hollywood stereotypes that resonate with people - cowboys, ranchers, farmers, miners, lumberjacks; Reagan on horseback, Bush with his fake ranch, Trump with his he-man collectibles. But we shouldn't buy into that propaganda and think that those represent significant voting blocs. They represent Walter Mitty fantasy voting blocs.
Trump makes people think they are somehow associated with heroic stereotypes when they go with him. It is all a bunch of nonsense.
