White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt sparked an international backlash after dismissing French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann’s call to return the Statue of Liberty. Leavitt mocked him as a “low-level” politician and claimed France should be grateful for U.S. intervention in World War II—only for history-savvy critics to clap back with a brutal fact-check. Even X/Twitter’s “Community Notes” had to step in, reminding Leavitt that without France, the U.S. might not exist at all.
