Time theft is certainly part of the business model. I recall when I started out working in Retail decades ago, if you wanted to move up part of the requirement was “Church Time”. You either stayed off the clock or you had little chance of moving to assistant department manager and then to department manager. 9 and 10 hour days were the norm of course no overtime should ever appear on your time card and if it did, it would likely get scratched off.

It’s an old problem made worse by technology that never allows you to disconnect from the workplace.

Of course an employee that might grab a cookie from a broken bag that was destined to the trash or credit, was immediately terminated for their terrible deed of stealing from their “benevolent” employer, a guilt ridden charge far worse than anything that had ever happened in all of human history.
