Sergeant Alvin York on the ethics of war

1. World War I Corporal Alvin York defeated a German machine gun nest singlehandedly.

Despite his belief against killing, York's rational for his action was that someone
had to stop the guns by which so many American soldiers were being killed.

After the battle he gave his report to a Colonel.
The Colonel - "You mean to tell me that you did it to save lives?"
Corporal York - "Yessir. That was why."
The Colonel - "Well York, what you've just told me is the most extraordinary thing of all."

Insofar as ethics in war, Sergeant York exemplified them. And still did his duty.
