3. The hazards of archaeology, they see religion and willies everywhere

Had this been an ongoing ritual site, they'd have found the bottom choked with offerings. Those few pots suggest a dedication, not an ongoing religious site.

Excavation nearby might tell whether it was religious bling or rich guy bling.

In any case, it would have been a dandy hydrogen sulfide factory and mosquito nursery. They didn't yet understand the need for aeration and water circulation.
