Religious Leaders In Westmoreland County Object To 'Drag Queen Bingo' Fundraisers [View all]

Bingo as a fundraising tool is popular with many churches. In this Pennsylvania community, though, Bingo is not so popular when the games are held at volunteer fire departments and staffed by drag queens. So, seven Christian churches are protesting these Bingo nights. It's rather unclear, though, whether the objection is to the drag queens who host the gaming or to the competition with church-run bingo games. Since the secular, drag queen bingo games have raised over $200,000, apparently those games are quite popular with local residents. Apparently the funds are raised to support the volunteer fire departments, rather than the local churches. I suspect the objection is financial, rather than moral, but the article doesn't go into that.

Religious Leaders In Westmoreland County Object To ‘Drag Queen Bingo’ Fundraisers

WESTMORELAND COUNTY (KDKA) — Religious leaders in Westmoreland County are expressing concerns over fundraisers in the community.

The one catching their attention: drag queen bingos at volunteer fire departments.

A group of seven Christian churches in the Mount Pleasant Township area called “Christians Uniting” issued a letter to about 14 volunteer fire departments in their congregation area on March 20.

{snip}

“It’s a shame. It’s really a disgrace to not only the fire departments but to the gay community,” he said.

He says his group has raised almost $200,000 in their fundraisers over the past year.
