4. I'm firmly in favor of recognizing the statistics, but they are incomplete.

Gibbon’s stats are based on only 602 games over 14 seasons; and average of 43 games per year. He’s never credited with more than 302 plate appearances, and 249 at bats in any one of those years — often much less. Under current rules, those numbers wouldn’t qualify him to lead a league in any annual offensive category.

Was he a great player? Absolutely; maybe the greatest of all time. But these statics may, I stress may, be misleading.
