1. A few thousand U.S. troops... roughly the size of Louisiana

A few thousand U.S. troops in overall control, perhaps indefinitely, of an area comprising nearly a third of Syria, a vast expanse of mostly desert terrain roughly the size of Louisiana

Just how much 'control' can so few have over such a large area?

Or is it just nothingburger bragging rights for empty desert?
