Step 3: Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

This might be verging on preachy.

Alternatively, this could be translated as

Step 1: Your life is messed up.

Step 2: Outside help is available.

Step 3: Be willing to accept outside help.
