In some cases, such as the peacock, one might even expect natural selection to have eliminated the trait in question. Cannot a fox more easily spot and catch a peacock, brilliant as he is and weighed down by such a unmanageable tail, than he can a well-camouflaged peahen? How indeed did the peacock get to keep his feathers?
