It has, among other beneficial traits, the effect of limiting anyone wanting to visit. It works better than "Posted" signs. It is a good thing, because I don't like many people...

Bathing on a regular basis is a modern thing, mostly driven by Madison Avenue. If no one bathed, no one else would need to! Until the last century, most people had two baths, one when they were born and one to prepare them for the grave. There is a maximum as to how dirty you can get, and you usually reach that in the first month or six weeks, after that it is just a maintenance issue. I have saved a ton of money on reducing my hot water usage, having to wash and dry towels, and the purchase of unnecessary soaps.

The poor man that is the subject of the story, had all of his natural antibiotics removed and it is not surprising that he died shortly thereafter. It was brought about by folks who didn't know how to mind their own damn business. His village was probably heavily Republican.
