My hunch is that you are female, because while assholes can be nondiscriminatory assholes, there is a lot of evidence on microaggressions showing that both some men and some women view women as lower status so they can behave badly toward them when they would not do so against men. They then react even worse when a woman surprises them by behaving assertively.

I don’t want to ask you to give up info that you don’t want to share but I am curious as to whether this happened here.
