It's the supporting players, Rains chief among them, who command attention in Casablanca. The use of humor and ambiguity and above all comic timing work brilliantly.

And the man himself fascinated me in Aljean Harmetz's book on Casablanca. We lost him too soon; what a lot of stories he had left in him!
