Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that flight disruptions would continue across the US as the government shutdown drags into its fourth week.
I cant guarantee you that your flights going to be on time. I cant guarantee you that your flights not going to be canceled, he told reporters Thursday.
More than 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration agents are being forced to work during the shutdown without pay. During past shutdowns, thats often led in an increase in employees calling out sick a trend that appears to be continuing with the latest funding lapse.
Duffy has said that normally flight delays caused by air traffic controller staffing shortages are about 5% but that figure has grown to more than 50% since the shutdown began. Disruptions due to staffing have been reported at airports across the US, including Dallas, Chicago, Nashville and outside Washington, DC.
