and always seemed to be involved with certain specific progressive causes - but hated Clinton so much they voted against her in the election.
That's not a Democrat.
I knew these people in real life, knew them personally. They said lots of "progressive" things but their fee-fees were so hurt by their candidate not winning the primary, that they apparently ditched all their professed progressive beliefs and decided it was okay to let the US burn under TSF rather than soil their precious souls by supporting someone (in their minds) less worthy than their hero.
Fuck that. They were never Democrats.
On the flip side, I know FAR more Democrats who support progressive causes, but realize that every goal requires steps to reach it, and are able to face reality when their preferred candidate doesn't win the primary. So your statement is true for SOME.
But when a so-called progressive is hurting the cause of electing Democrats to bring this country back from the brink - even if those Dems might not immediately "free Palestine" 
, then those so-called progressives are NOT Democrats.
