While it is hard to pinpoint the beginning of Trump and Putins relationship, Trump claimed to have met Putin while Trump was still a private citizen.
Among other times, in Oct. 2013, Trump mentioned knowing Putin in a late night interview with David Letterman. Ive done a lot of business with the Russians, Trump said, adding that theyre smart and tough. He went on to say about meeting Putin, Hes a tough guy. I met him once, though he never clarified when this first meeting was.

So even if Trump is lying about having met Putin, his envy was already in action back then.
