Trump Inserts Himself into Club World Cup Trophy Lift [View all]
I know a lot of people here don't follow soccer, but this one is yet another international embarrassment.
In a shocking result, the underdog Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey today, on the strength of two goals and an assist by Chelsea star Cole Palmer. PSG was highly favored to win after destroying Inter Milan in the Champions League final and running through the best teams in the tournament (Bayern Munchen, Real Madrid) with outrageous score lines.
Now, a trophy lift is an important ceremony in soccer. The team captain brings the trophy to the podium in front of the team, then does an orchestrated lift as the whole team celebrates. I have never seen anyone else on the podium for a trophy lift. It is the team's moment. For today's lift, the trophy was brough to the podium by Trump and the President of FIFA (two corrupt assholes). While the FIFA President at least had the good sense to get off the podium, Trump stood there like an idiot, as if he were part of the team. Both Cole Palmer and Reese James (the Chelsea captain) looked at him confused (Palmer actually looked disgusted). James did the trophy lift with Trump standing next to him, realizing that Trump wasn't going to leave!
It was, as the kids used to say, AWKWARD.
Another disgrace. God knows what he will do at the actual World Cup next year.
