(KUT) The final speech Friday night came from Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico, who drew one of the convention's loudest ovations. He used much of his time to highlight the long history of Texans resisting concentrated political power. “That Texas state of mine resists any tyranny, whether it comes from dictators 200 years ago or billionaire mega donors today,” Talarico said.

(NY Times) Senator Susan Collins and Graham Platner are locked in a neck-and-neck Senate contest in Maine, according to a New York Times/Portland Press Herald/Siena poll, as voters weigh a desire for Democratic control of the Senate against Ms. Collins’s record and controversy around Mr. Platner’s past conduct. Mr. Platner leads the race by two percentage points among likely voters, capturing the support of 49 percent, compared to 47 percent for Ms. Collins.

Trump has faced significant criticism over the last couple of weeks because of the state of the reflecting pool. The administration undertook a more than $16 million renovation project on the grounds that the pool had never been properly repaired by previous administrations. But the new pool bottom began peeling, and the algae Trump had promised to eliminate returned.

A bridge to Canada may be blocked by the Trump administration

(NPR) Construction on the Gordie Howe International Bridge, named for the Hall of Fame Canadian-born hockey legend who played for the Detroit Red Wings, began in 2018. It was set to open early this year. That was before President Trump intervened in a social media post. Trump demanded that Canada share ownership with the United States before he would allow the bridge to open. Months passed. In June, the bridge authority actually scheduled a grand opening. But at the last minute, it was canceled.
