How Measles Kills:
🦠 1. Immune Suppression (Immune Amnesia)
What happens: Measles virus attacks and destroys memory immune cells (B and T cells), erasing immunity to past infections.
Effect: This leaves the person vulnerable to other infections (like pneumonia or diarrhea) for months or even years afterward.
Why its dangerous: Even after recovering from measles, the weakened immune system cant fight off common illnesses effectively.
⸻
🫁 2. Pneumonia (Lung Infection)
Most common cause of death from measles.
Measles can directly cause viral pneumonia or pave the way for bacterial pneumonia.
Especially dangerous for infants, the elderly, and the malnourished.
⸻
🧠 3. Encephalitis (Brain Swelling)
Rare but often fatal.
Measles can cause acute encephalitis, which leads to brain swelling, seizures, deafness, or permanent brain damage.
Death can occur quickly if the inflammation is severe.
⸻
❗ 4. Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE)
Very rare, but always fatal.
A slow, progressive brain infection that appears years after measles infection.
Causes neurological deterioration, seizures, coma, and death.
⸻
🚨 5. Severe Diarrhea and Dehydration
Especially in children in low-resource settings.
Leads to electrolyte imbalance and shock if untreated.
⸻
📉 Risk Factors That Increase Death from Measles:
Malnutrition (especially vitamin A deficiency)
Being under age 5 or over age 20
Immune suppression (from HIV/AIDS, cancer, etc.)
Lack of access to medical care
⸻
💉 Bottom Line:
Measles is not a harmless childhood disease. It can kill by wiping out the immune system and opening the door to deadly secondary infections or brain inflammation. Fortunately, its preventable with vaccination, which is highly effective and safe.

(15,307 posts)3. Well, if it weren't for the vaccine, people wouldn't be criticizing them for not using the vaccine . . .
so yeah, I can see how they'd see the vaccine as being bad. Not everyday you confront an emptiness in your life which is a daily reminder you're a dumbass.
