I first proposed it almost a decade ago on the blog I occasionally write for.

So, yeah - let's do it. All we need is some legislators with some guts.

And it uses market forces to usher in changes. I would think the RW would love that.
I sure hope it goes somewhere, but I have little hope anymore.

I heard of the idea years ago on the Thomas Hartman Show. It's a free market solution to irresponsible gun ownership.

It makes sense. We are required to buy car insurance to drive, we need the same kind of insurance on deadly weapons. That way when your 13 year old shoots up the school with one of your weapons, the victims can sue your insurance company for damages. If your kid ran over a bunch of people in your car, you would have to at least pay for their medical care out of your insurance coverage.

No restrictions on gun ownership is one of the few issues that Republicans use to get out the vote. That, and immigration, really riles them to come out and to vote against their own benefit.

a sane interpretation of the Second Amendment, though I guess insurance could be part of the well-regulated phrase, militias or no.

All gun owners should be in some kind of group and be collectively responsible for their entire membership. If you want to own an AR-15 you should be trained and ready to help defend America, if needed. Otherwise those Militias won't be contributing to "our collective security".
