Let's pick salmon at $10 a pound. That's the retail price. What does the distributor charge the supermarket? Or the importer if he buys directly? Or what does the Canadian supplier charge their buyers? That is the price subject to tariff. Let's say they buy at $8 and sell at $10. 25% is $2. So the new retail will be $12. Or, to keep profit margins a stable % of sales price, maybe $12.50. Because in a world of credit lines and borrowed capital, the rate of return on capital is what's important to the supermarket to stay afloat.

I think they'll experiment with rather stiff increases on some items, to see if they sell, then they'll back off a bit. Subsidize losses on some with fatter margins on other items. Some items will disappear for good. I think Canadians will be better fed than we are. So many high quality goods from Canada. Cookies!

This whole thing is just insane and unnecessary.
