Navy Yard weapon exempted under proposed ban
Easy solution: add it to the ban list[quote]
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The shotgun used by the Navy Yard shooter is identified by name as a firearm that would not be covered under a proposed weapons ban supported by the White House.
The shotgun Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis used in his rampage, the Remington 870 Express, is included in a long list of firearms that would be exempted from a ban if legislation introduced in the Senate earlier this year were to become law.
The bill, introduced by California Democrat Dianne Feinstein, has little hope of passage. It would ban 157 specific firearms designed for military and law enforcement use, and it would exempt more than 2,200 others.

(3,245 posts)If you can kill 8 people in 8 seconds with it, then it doesn't need to be on the streets.
The Aurora shooter did most of his killing with a pump shotgun as well.
It seems to be just as bad as a Bushmaster.

(3,251 posts)What you are proposing is absurd to the extreme. The vast majority of shotgun owners use them for hunting or home protection. Getting something like what you want passed in Congress would never happen. A pipe dream, and nothing more.

(3,245 posts)Too bad.
They kill people.

(3,251 posts)an AR-15 and a shotgun when it comes to common sense gun control. Your zeal for all out and all encompassing gun control is showing. The extreme left is just as bad as the extreme right on this issue.

(3,245 posts)They realized that people are just as dead if you kill them with a shotgun as if you did it with a Bushmaster.

(3,251 posts)point do you want to stop? Like I said, the extreme left is just as bad as the extreme right.

(3,251 posts)So very typical.
And yes, I'm fully aware of the forum. I'm just not ready to ban every weapon known to man to satisfy the extreme left on this issue. Enhanced background checks, a limited "real" assault weapons ban, and a limit to magazine capacity (I don't think 30 round magazines are really necessary) fine, I'm all for those measures.
But ban everything down to shotguns? That's beyond the pale, and why the extreme gun control advocates are losing the debate - and will continue to lose the debate.

My neighbors, a family of four, were snuffed in a milli-second by a 17-year-old in a Honda. Should we ban teenage drivers and Hondas?

(3,245 posts)I expect that "cars kill people too" out of the gungeoneers. Strange to see it in here.

(1,415 posts)It ain't exactly a weapon of war, with the vast, vast, VAST majority of the 10 million used worldwide are for shooting clay disks and hunting squirrels. The army uses them for blowing locks on doors, and that's about it. Hell, most cops don't even carry them in cruisers anymore. Clones of it are about the only firearm allowed to be imported from China by the ATF, which won't let squat through from China.
For fuck's sake, even Andrew Cuomo, the real (i.e.: the only governor to immediately pass something after Sandy Hook... with a Republican house in the legislature) be-all, end-all enemy of "gun nuts" everywhere owns one:
Yes, that is a Remington 870 (or it's a Remington 1100, the same thing, but an even-scarier "semi-auto" version). A fancy one with pretty wood, but a Remington 870 available in bulk from every gun shop in the country.
Yeah, putting pump shotguns on the list just lost pretty much every sportsman nationwide who WOULD be in favor of restrictions on ARs and AKs. And you thought the last gun control bill went down in flames...
Now, a 5-round magazine ban for shotguns would be acceptable to many, because most can load only four. Still, with the resistance to a ban on ARs so nasty, you'll never EVER get this with anything even resembling the current Congress.

(39,229 posts)But that's never going to happen anytime in the foreseeable future. Especially not with our political system where two senators from a sparsely populated pro-gun state have has much power as two senators from a populous pro-control state.
