Even in the 50s, they had warning signs all around them. The "apples" looked enough like crab apples that I knew to leave them alone without being told.

The triee is interesting in that it doesn't rely on animals or birds to propagate, it grows on beaches and drops its fruit to be picked up by the surf and carried far from the parent plant.
