I want to say goodbye to the wonderful people of this group.
I no longer feel that DU wants people like those who post in this group to continue to be members of this community. I was going to try to stay just to be able to say hello here every once in a while, but since realizing that we truly are not wanted here at DU3, that won't work. We don't deserve to be treated like second-class citizens.
This section from the DU3 Terms of Service says it all:
Democratic Underground is not intended to be a platform for kooks and crackpots peddling paranoid fantasies with little or no basis in fact. To accomodate our more imaginative members we tolerate some limited discussion of so-called "conspiracy theories" under the following circumstances: First, those discussions are not permitted in our heavily-trafficked Main forums; and second, those discussions cannot stray too far into Crazyland (eg: chemtrails, black helicopters, 9/11 death rays or holograms, the "New World Order," the Bilderbergers, the Illuminati, the Trilateral Commission, the Freemasons, alien abduction, Bigfoot, and the like). In addition, please be aware that many conspiracy theories have roots in racism and anti-semitism, and Democratic Underground has zero tolerance for bigoted hate speech. In short, you take your chances.
DU2 had the following:
When discussing certain topics -- especially those relating to each human being's unique personal identity -- DU members have a responsibility to show greater understanding and sensitivity. To help promote a welcoming atmosphere for all of our members, the moderators are empowered to remove any post that they deem insensitive. Such topics include, but are not limited to: race or ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or gender identity, religious believers or non-believers, Jews or Judaism, Muslims or Islam, geographic region or place of origin, disability (mental or physical), weight or other physical characteristics, or age. Moderators may also remove any post using insensitive terminology (eg: 'cocksucker,' 'pink tutu,' 'bitch,' 'whore,' 'retard,' etc.).
What a change...

I'm off to change my password to a random value so this is permanent. We do have a group on Facebook if anyone wants to join us.

Lurking skeptics/atheists, agnostics, etc.: I'm sure you'll have great fun with this thread. Have at it...

As long as they don't hassle us...isn't it okay?I'm glad you posted the terms. I had no idea..They must think we're harmless enough or we wouldn't be here, right? I don't know. Subject/Title TOS: about the crazy talk and what is deemed crazy
Skinner: I think it is obvious that the TOS is referring to kooky conspiracy theories involving the Freemasons.
> The TOS mentions Freemasons, what exactly is crazy about a fraternal organization?
>
> I am an AMORC Rosicrucian student / member, does that imply that I am also considered a crazytowner??
>
> Is Mysticism also off limits? Or is it only allowed in the different groups on spirituality?
>
> How will I know whether or not I would be considered crazy by my belonging to a fraternal organization?
>
> If someone is a Freemason does that mean that they are not allowed to talk about being a Freemason or Freemasons in general?

I understand how the TOS reads as if we are not wanted here. However, I believe that the admins just don't want DU to be viewed as a place that condones Conspiracies Theories. Having interests in Mysticism, Astrology, and the Super Natural is not CT material. I haven't sent much time posting as you are well aware of my reasons for being apprehensive in doing so. However, if I feel inclined to do so I will always have that chance.
I hope you will reconsider your position and stick around. But I value whatever decision you make, and perhaps we can still communicate through email or Wishadoo.
Take Care my Friend.

he is being very curt, and really vague as far as i am concerned...because things others consider kooky would be fine here. He did not say that our little group was exempt from that kind of scrutiny. Like the Matthew messages, they talk about illuminatiu...just because I kind of take that in myself with a grain of salt, is one thing...if I get caught talking about matthew messages in another forum, will i get whacked?
seriously, i was in GD this weekend, and someone brought up Matthew messages...nothing specific, but I was worried about saying I read them too because of the woo content...
*sigh*
time for us to find our ASAH contingency plan, as I said....

(17,567 posts)it really isn't up to me how decisions are made.
I will probably stay a member until my star status lasts. I don't have the funds to contribute to DU, so my days are numbered.
I still don't plan on joining facebook, even though someone who I really admire is wanting me to join. Perhaps I will change my mind at some point but for now I don't plan on it.
I will always be a Wishadooaler, and we can still meet-up over there.

(10,459 posts)When I first started coming here in earlier years, there were several people who were always around to help the newbies. You were one of those, together with Nancy, Desert Rose, Stella, Metta, Rick, and others. Many thanks for all you have contributed to ASAH over the years, for your sage advice, your brilliance, and your friendship. I'll see you around in other forms/forums unless they go totally bonkers (which, given timelines, is not out of the realm of possibilities). But in any event, you've carved out a place in my heart and I will always look for you there, dear friend.

(31,170 posts)to ASAH subject matter? As far as I know the elements of freemasonry that are being referred to there are the conspiracy theory oriented secret sect things and not the basic elements of the organization. Perhaps I am missing the connection that you are making?
Celebration
(15,812 posts)It has to do with the general attitude of things out of the mainstream. I do get the feeling that this group, though tolerated barely here, isn't exactly embraced.
Plus this place (ASAH) seems to be a safe haven for all kinds of otherwise "kooky" ideas. We tend to be more accepting of fringe ideas in general, because our ideas are on the fringe. I don't really buy into a lot of stuff posted here, but learn from it anyway. I assume that a lot of people don't really get what I talk about. But we are all respectful.
One time someone knew to come here and post that they witnessed the Chicago Airport UFO incident. They didn't feel comfortable posting it anywhere else on DU. And this was at least a month before it hit the news. It was really cool!
I don't think Skinner has a nuanced view of "conspiracy theories" as we have here. In fact, we are basically ALL nuance.
I also think there may be some other agenda at play here...........with the DU3 thing. There may be strings behind the players calling the shots. Or could they be thinking about selling it????? Not sure.

(11,033 posts)sell DU off, making it a part of a larger media net presence-and this is where sites like these (that are often quoted, ref to, have a certain respect level and rep in other bigger media groups ) often morph into as the next stage. I was working at a music internet co in early 00's and eventually they found a big buyer and continued to operate in a bigger pond.
-look at what Huffington Post did (that was the end game for Arianna H anyway, build it up and then sell it off)
My sense is that the DU owners will sell, or are in the first stages of entertaining bids for the site. It's a very good site and it does have street cred and real presence now).
Best of luck to you!

(18,186 posts)This is not a happy moment in ASAH.
The way I read the new TOS, the "kookiness" won't be tolerated in the Main forums. These groups are different.
Seriously, one can view mainstream Judeo-Christian mythology as "kookie." The virgin birth, resurrection, bread is flesh and wine is blood are examples of "wackiness" and many athiest/agnostic DUers will openly say as much. I have even been callous enough to say as much, back when I was rotten and snarkier.
But there are still Christian groups here. And many, many, many DUers identify as Christian, Catholic, Jewish, etc. on the Main forums. I doubt Skinner would let anyone disrupt in their groups.
The idea of groups is to have "refuges" where out-of-the-mainstream ideas are discussed and entertained. I seriously don't see that changing for the ASAH group with the new TOS.
Skinner has never bothered this group and we have been (mostly) free of disruptors here, so I hope you will reconsider.
I really do.....we all love you IHAD ((((((((((((((((IHaveADream))))))))))))))

rosesaylavee
(12,126 posts)there is a post that's been 'hidden by jury' for using a forbidden word and subject so ASAH here has new limits on what can be discussed openly. And that poster's posting rights have been revoked (aka TSd).

(13 posts)Try not to label it with the Orwellian-speak. What is "disrupting?" Not parroting what others say? I am a proud conspiracy theorist. I am also a blunt person. I don't mince my words. And I just read in GD about the new ID for the Internet. I mean: WTF???

kneedeepinthehoopla
(40 posts)'Troll' implies that I am just here to dick people around. No, I am here to enlighten folks. But I see the futility in it and will be ceasing to bother shortly.
It really doesn't matter anyhow. Everyone will understand this someday; I just didn't want it to be the hard way! This site was supposedly created to combat a creeping destructive element within the former administration. Now I wonder what is its purpose. Axing people for saying something which you feel is crazy or sheer nonsense is totally unfair and undemocratic.

(4,950 posts)does not care for FB, Wishadoo has an ASAH and one only needs to PM OGR or (if unable to PM d/t memberships/star requirements) you can go to Wishadoo and request membership there as it is a private group.
I am on both and the FB one is pretty active. I miss some of our members that have reservations about FB, so would like more action on Wishadoo then.
I have severely curtailed my time here, maybe check in once a week to ASAH. I feel very badly about some people that have been cut out for what seems to me to be arbitrarily reasons (rules selectively added and enforced). You guys (ASAH) to me have been the best part of this place. There are some other members on the greater board that don't post here that I really like and I hope to see them again soon but there are other places to find them I guess. I also am not enamored of the stranglehold two parties have on our political system so I am not fitting in anyway in the greater mission of what is now DU. Knowing what it is and what it is not is probably important in releasing anger and feelings of injustice (and saving a few pennies as well).

I've felt betrayed by DU3 since its inception. My Scorpio intuition tells me there is more to it than meets the eye. Believe that is why so many of us here in ASAH have had strong reservations about it......we sense an ulterior motive. What it is, I don't know. I just know I don't like the feeling. I've become less & less interested in politics of late for some reason.....maybe it's the total polarization we are experiencing in this country now. The nastiness is so bad, you could cut it w/a knife. I simply don't want to play in that type of sandbox.
DU3 feels like a "business" now.....a very clinical feel. My perception is we've been divided into segments to negate our power. But why? Perhaps it will all become clear at a later date.
Will always feel a close & special attachment to all here at ASAH. Y'all have made the transitions of the last few years almost enjoyable.....for that I will be forever thankful.

I'm pretty sure I understand the concerns that led to the new rule, but I think it's a mistake. It's one thing to limit actions based on beliefs we consider wacko; it's another thing to limit speech.
I don't believe in chem trails, but I consider them a lot more plausible than that Jesus was the literal son of a god and literally, physically ascended into heaven, etc. Is discussion of Jesus outlawed, too? Who gets to decide?

He sure doesn't want anything like that to happen again if he wants to sell it. So, in part at least, I get it!
