March 31, 1972, episode of "Appointment with Destiny" . . .

. . . which is entitled "The Crucifixion of Jesus."

This presentation has stuck with me ever since the time I viewed it when it was first aired. It is done in a faux-documentary style with soliloquies from some of the major principles such as Pontius Pilate and Joseph ben Caiaphas. I liked the portrayal of the cynical, elderly bushy-bearded Greek physician who scoffed at religious beliefs.

The feature offers points of view for both believers and non-believers. The focus on the political-social tensions of the time is excellent. Pilate is portrayed as a vigorous no-nonsense Roman prefect with a confident air which seems to me more compelling than other portrayals I have seen. Barabbas and other Zealots come across as a major threat to ignite the simmering hatred of the citizenry against the Romans.

The narrator is John Huston who, I believe, would not have attached himself to the project unless he felt it had merit.
