My mother at the Museum of African American History and Culture

I went with my mother to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. I took this picture of my mother who was overcome with emotion as she went through the museum and saw what humans are capable of doing to each other. However, she wasn't alone. I saw people of all races wiping away tears as the gravity of the numbers enslaved, killed and abused weighed heavily on them. There's something about this image of my mother that just gets me choked up. 😢

but we should always be aware that as the generations pass there will always be those who want to rewrite history so it can be done again. That is why I am so glad there is this museum - never forget - and hope.

12. We can hope that history never repeats itself...but look at Dumpty and Muslim ban and deportation...

...centers for Muslims and Mexicans. Under dumpty, any person or color or someone who does look white or has a non traditional "american" name cna be rounded up.

25. The museum has special rooms for such reactions .....

Each floor has a video booth large enough to hold a family comfortably, with the idea that they tell the stories handed down in their own families, and those stories are videoed and stored. The booths were being heavily used when I was there.

She wasn't ready and only made it through the Emmitt Till exhibit and then had to leave. She wants to return another day to finish. I will be sure to hug her for you.

Please tell her there is a 67 yo white woman from the south (whose mama taught her pretty well)who is sorry that she had to see any of that.

26. We visited last fall about a month after it opened. Outstanding.

Many very powerful exhibits in the historical section. I recommend everyone visit this museum.

My nine-year-old daughter was very taken by the exhibits, and we deliberately didn't show her the Emmitt Till and lynching exhibits.

The food area was fascinating, too, with regional African-American dishes from all over the country.
