I did a status check on the garlic. Usually I start harvesting during the first week in July

This beauty was on the south side of the house. The stalk definitely indicated it was time to harvest, so I did. It looks like I have a really good crop, this year. I've seen signs of a number of plants that should produce bulbs right around this size.

2. Still picking some scapes

Pulled one it was small. We harvest July 15 as target date. But of course that depends on conditions. Where are you? We are upstate NY.

3. I'm in mid-Michigan

I pay close attention to how high the leaf drying. When it's about 1/3, it's ready.

The weather, this year, might work in my favor. We didn't really get a deep freeze, last Winter, so the thaw was early. We've had a good balance of rain and hot weather. I've got some very robust garlic growing where it's never grown before. I also use the smaller stuff, too. I use the really small heads of garlic in a lot of cooking and he small cloves as a garlic pill. I smash a couple of them and then swallow them whole, washing them down with water. My grandfather used to eat several LARGE cloves, every morning - chewed them up and swallowed them down. He lived to 97.

I'll spend the weekend getting everything ready so that I can get it pulled, bundled and hung for curing. It should be ready in time to use with my garden produce.

I have never had any luck the few times I tried to grow garlic. I didn't plant any this year. Looks like a good crop is the prize this year!

5. I harvested mine last week

They were about that size. Definitely early this year.
