(20,377 posts)back in the 70s. They described the sauce as russian dressing, 3 steppes removed. I never forgot the pun, but also never saw a recipe for russian dressing. When I checked google just now, it seems like russian dressing has been renamed 1000 island.
Don't forget the dill pickle slices!
Let us know how you did

(11,598 posts)... for Russian dressing because it's too simple - just equal quantities of ketchup and mayonnaise.
Back in the '70s, the difference between that and thousand island was that thousand island included other herbs and/or spices.

(20,377 posts)as a salad girl (yes, my title!) We made homemade dressings for the salad bar. I remember making french dressing with a large can of tomato soup, mayo, and other items, Caesar dressing, Italian dressing, maybe 1000 Island. When I saw that Time article, I wondered from then on why I never saw russian dressing.
At home, we made our own cocktail sauce (ketchup, mustard, horseradish, a dash of hot sauce, maybe Worchestershire). And tartar sauce (mayo, horseradish mustard, dill pickle, fresh onion) They also made their own BBQ sauce. My parents made a tossed salad with a mayo dressing. I bet if they'd called it Ranch, they'd be the rich ones
It's odd that my years have spanned when almost everything was still homemade, but the processed fooods were getting popular to now, when you can get everything ready made.
Hey, DuncanPup, how'd the burgers come out?
