EU's top diplomat calls for billions for ammunition for Ukraine

European foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Thursday called on member states to make €5 billion ($5.4 billion) available for ammunition for Ukraine's army, amid rapid developments in the conflict following talks between the US and Russia.

Kallas said not just words but also deeds are required to help Ukraine fend off Russia's attacks, as she addressed EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday.

Her call came as the EU faces a risk of being sidelined in attempts to end the war after a flurry of talks between the US and Russia, and the US and Ukraine.

Kallas originally presented a plan that envisaged European military aid commitments for Ukraine totalling €20 billion to €40 billion for the year, but did not receive enough support for this from member states, partly due to high levels of debt in many EU countries.
