Liberals choose Mark Carney to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Canada has a fighting, Harvard-educated economist as its new prime minister. Mark Carney, fifty-nine, was overwhelmingly elected leader of the governing Liberal Party.

He succeeds outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and will lead the suddenly resurgent Liberals in an expectant spring election. The party winning most seats in the House of Commons forms the government, its leader becomes Prime Minister.

“Upon taking the oath of office, he will become the first Canadian prime minister to have never served in prior elected office and the first since John Turner not to be sitting in the House of Commons at time of appointment,” Wikipedia contributors noted.

Carney will be sworn in by the Governor General, King Charles III’s representative in Ottawa, later this week. He may be sworn on a day that Trump slaps a steep tariff on softwood lumber imports and Canadian dairy products.
