Related: About this forumUS Tariffs Help Russian Economy - Econ Lessons
Washington has not clearly articulated a mandate for Russia to go home. Instead, I see division created between our friends, such a Canada, Mexico and the EU. Further, evidence suggest oil price increases or volatility can help Russia's economy. If tariffs are imposed on Canadian oil and the US seeks other sources such as Venezuela a Russian ally to help fill the gap, I would say this is a net win for Russia. I can not predict oil prices, they might go down, but I can say economics that is free, including free trade is better for humanity. We want to make the world a better place.

(67,318 posts)2. This seems the obvious point.
Tariffs are not helping the US or Canada/Mexico.
Trump is helping Putin.

(38,723 posts)3. I read yesterday that tariffs on Chinese soybeans mean more sales of Russian soybeans -- Putin benefits.
Musk benefits from hampering Chinese EV sales, and tariffs on cars and car parts from Canada and Mexico will raise prices on other American car brands, making Teslas seem like a better deal. Tariffs on oil and gas will mean US will seek other sources, including straw man purchases indirectly from Russia, bypassing the sanctions enforced by the democratic countries of the world.
These tariffs are so precisely targeted it gives the whole game away. Not that that matters to either of our current presidents, because whadya gonna do about it ?
