Notice on NSIDC "Sea Ice Today" site

Notice: Recent delivery from the US Navy of the SSMIS passive microwave data that this sea ice product uses has become more sporadic. The Defense Department has informed NSIDC that they will reduce the priority of processing the SSMIS data, resulting in likely daily data gaps. NSIDC will explore switching to a different sensor, the JAXA Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2). We expect to be able to continue our regular analyses after calibrating between sensors to keep the time series as consistent as possible. However, this transition will take time. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience during this transition.

User notice: Degraded SSMIS Data Delivery Affecting Data Products
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4, 2025

Recent delivery from the US Navy of the SSMIS passive microwave data that several sea ice and brightness temperature products use has become more sporadic. The Defense Department has informed NSIDC that they will reduce the priority of processing the SSMIS data, resulting in likely daily data gaps. NSIDC will explore switching to a different sensor, the JAXA Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2). However, this transition will take time. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience during this transition.

The data sets using SSMIS for input:
  • Bootstrap Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS
  • Calibrated Enhanced-Resolution Passive Microwave Daily EASE-Grid 2.0 Brightness Temperature ESDR
  • DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures
  • Near-Real-Time DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures
  • Near-Real-Time DMSP SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations
  • Near-Real-Time NOAA/NSIDC Climate Data Record of Passive Microwave Sea Ice Concentration
  • Near-Real-Time SSM/I-SSMIS EASE-Grid Daily Global Ice Concentration and Snow Extent
  • Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data
  • Sea Ice Index
AMSR2 prototype sea ice concentration has been incorporated into the latest version of the Near-Real-Time NOAA/NSIDC Climate Data Record of Passive Microwave Sea Ice Concentration. Users may wish to begin utilizing those AMSR2 data as the SSMIS portion continues to degrade. As documented in NSIDC Special Report #27, the SSMIS-using CDR and its AMSR2 corollary are not yet fully intercalibrated. Users will see differences between the products, as AMSR2’s higher resolution provides better ice edge detection than SSMIS. We are developing a new version that will intercalibrate these sensors, though this will take time.
