*Both of Gorsuch's parents were also attorneys.[13] They encouraged their children to engage in debate, often spontaneously.[14] From 1976 to 1980, Anne Burford served in the Colorado House of Representatives. In 1981, she was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as the first woman to serve as administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.[15][14] Her conservative views contrasted with those of her husband, who was a liberal.[16]
