U.S. Department of Defense Grants Baker Hughes ‘Awardable’ Status for Development of Geothermal Power Solutions

March 12, 2025
  • Baker Hughes now eligible to develop utility-scale geothermal power plants to supply U.S. military bases

  • U.S military leveraged Tradewinds procurement process for adoption of resilient energy technologies
HOUSTON and LONDON – March 12, 2025 – Baker Hughes, an energy technology company, announced Wednesday that it was selected by the U.S. Air Force and the Department of Defense’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) to explore opportunities to tap into America’s abundant geothermal energy supply to enhance the country’s national security.

Having achieved “Awardable” status, Baker Hughes can now explore developing utility-scale geothermal power plants to supply U.S. military bases around the globe with reliable and cost-effective electricity, even during a grid outage.

“The ability of geothermal to provide reliable, secure baseload power makes it an ideal addition to America’s energy mix,” said Ajit Menon, vice president of Geothermal, Oilfield Services & Equipment at Baker Hughes. “Baker Hughes has been a pioneer in this field for more than 40 years and our unique subsurface-to-surface expertise and advanced technology across the geothermal value chain will help the U.S. military unlock this critical domestic energy source, while simultaneously driving economic growth and energy independence.”
