European Energy produces first e-methanol at Kasso

European Energy produces first e-methanol at Kassø
Mar 12, 2025

European Energy has been successful in commissioning the first methanol reactor at its Kassø Power-to-X-facility and first five tons is now produced

Copenhagen, Denmark, 12th of March, 2025 – European Energy has successfully produced the first e-methanol at the Kassø Power-to-X facility. The methanol was produced in the first methanol line out of 2 at the facility and was achieved using biogenic CO₂ sourced locally at the Biogas facility in Tønder.

The production will now be ramped up and the facility will have the capacity to produce 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol with three electrolysers from Siemens Energy and a methanol loop designed and constructed by European Energy.

The electrolysers has a combined capacity of 52.5 MW and is powered mainly by the nearby Kassø Solar Park facility which is also developed and operated by European Energy.

“We are thrilled to have produced the first e-methanol at our Kassø facility. This is a pivotal moment on the journey that started four years ago and the lessons learned will enable us to refine the process, improve efficiencies, and bring down costs for future projects,” says Emil Vikjær-Andresen, EVP and Head of Power-to-X at European Energy.

Some things just are not easily converted to using electricity or hydrogen. “E-methanol" can be used as a liquid fuel in some of these cases.

1. WinGD debuts X-DF-M platform with biggest ever methanol-fuelled engine

Cargo ships are an example of something difficult to power with batteries or hydrogen.

WinGD debuts X-DF-M platform with biggest ever methanol-fuelled engine
26 February 2025

Swiss marine power company WinGD’s first methanol-fuelled engine is to be delivered to the shipyard after passing factory and type approval tests. The ten-cylinder, 92‑bore X-DF-M engine is destined for a 16,000 TEU container ship and is the biggest methanol-fuelled engine built to date.

There are 56 X-DF-M engines on order across bore sizes ranging from 52 to 92, in similar cylinder configurations and engine rating fields as diesel-fuelled X-Engines. The addition of methanol capability to WinGD’s engine line-up further extends the decarbonisation options available to deep-sea ship operators, which include the long-established X-DF LNG-fuelled engine platform and a new ammonia-fuelled X-DF-A platform.

As previously reported, the first X-DF-M engine will be installed on the fourth vessel of a new series. The previous three engines were fitted with 10X92-B engines which will be converted to 10X92DF-M engines once the first, newbuild methanol engine is commissioned. Dual-fuel methanol conversion packages will be available for all WinGD single-fuel and dual-fuel engines.

Methanol, like LNG, can be produced with low carbon emissions by using either biomass or renewable energy with captured carbon. The evolution of these fuel pathways – with similar routes towards green ammonia and e-diesel – will be essential for shipping’s energy transition, as will the engine technology to use emerging low- and zero-carbon fuels. WinGD’s range of single- and dual-fuel engines support maritime decarbonisation, whichever fuel pathway ship operators choose.

2. I one time commented, in some significant detail, some of this e-fuel bullshit in a series of scientific papers.

It's here: A Detailed Thermodynamic Accounting of a Route to Obtaining World Motor Fuels from Solar and Wind.

That's always what this bullshit is about, the unsupportable belief that electricity all comes from solar and wind. It doesn't. It's overwhelmingly made from fossil fuels, and as such is thermodynamically degraded.

The post analyzes these papers:

Production of Oxymethylene Dimethyl Ethers from Hydrogen and Carbon Dioxide—Part I: Modeling and Analysis for OME1 (Mitsos et al, Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., 2019, 58 (12), pp 4881–4889)

Production of Oxymethylene Dimethyl Ethers from Hydrogen and Carbon Dioxide—Part II: Modeling and Analysis for OME3–5 (Mitsos et al, Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., 2019, 58 (14), pp 5567–5578) and it includes (from the papers) Sankey diagrams about the exergy destroyed in the process:

The caption:

Figure 7. Sankey diagram of exergy flows within the reference process chain for the production of 1 kg of OME3–5. Gray boxes denote the different process steps, and percentages are the exergy efficiencies of these separate steps. Overall exergy efficiency from H2 to OME3–5 is 53%

The Sankey diagram does not include the exergy destruction with making the hydrogen. When it is included, the overall efficiency of the process falls to 38%.

But who cares if we waste energy to advertise that we're "green?" Why give a fuck about the collapse of the planetary atmosphere when we can distract attention by cute little schemes to pretend we're not doing what we are doing?

It's not like Denmark has any attention, other than lip service, of stopping the drilling of oil and gas in the North Sea. They don't.

From the Danish Energy Agency: Oil and gas are important to the Danish economy One can also find on the Danish Energy Agency's website how much oil and gas they drilled since 1972: Yearly production, injection, flare, fuel and export in SI units

Of course, if you ask the average credulous rube about energy in Denmark, they'll tell you all about wind turbines.

A Sankey Diagram of the overall energy picture of Denmark gives a more realistic picture of Danish Energy flows:

Like pretty much every fucking "Renewable Energy Will Save Us" paper, it's a soothsaying paper. Three years after its publication there is no intention of shutting oil and gas wells run by the Danes in the North Sea. In fact, you can still apply, as of 2025, for a drilling license from the Danish Government.

If you do, be sure to post pictures of wind turbines and an article about making trivial amounts of "electrofuels" to advertise that you're green.

Rather than waste electricity on cheap little Potemkin scams, the Danes, if they really have extra electricity to waste on electrofuels, (they really don't, their electricity climate intensity is 300% higher than France's) should ship it to those antinuke German assholes to keep them from burning coal along with the gas the Norwegians and Danes are happy to sell them.

That is a counterfactual assertion, as is clear from the OP.

4. Bullshit. The operative dishonest word is "mainly."

This means that the trivial system is connected to what is undoubtedly the grid.

When the economics of the plant are trashed by being able to run 20% to 30% of the time, thus being a stranded useless asset for 70% of the time, the owners of the plant will buy electricity from the grid.

Lots and lots and lots of advertising is bought by the obscenely gullible people to whom the advertising is directed. The orange mold living in the White House advertised he was going to make America great again as if it weren't great already. The result of the acceptance by stupid people of the rhetoric is that American greatness was destroyed perhaps irreversibly. The "Green electricity" lie didn't save the atmosphere from destruction. It squandered resources and made the atmosphere move ever more quickly to it's destruction. Likewise, that destruction is also irreversible.

We buy into dishonest marketing at our peril.
