Another fire at Moss Landing battery facility raises health and air quality concerns

Luz Pena and Lauren Martinez KGO | Thursday, February 20, 2025

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) -- It happened again. There was another fire at the Vistra Energy battery storage facility in Monterey County.

An alert urged residents Tuesday night to close windows and doors as fire crews fought the blaze.

"First responders will remain at the scene to ensure that we have an efficient response if needed," said Chief Joel Mendoza with North County Fire Protection District.

The North County Fire Protection District detected the exact location of the blaze in an area known to them. It says a flare-up like this is not unusual.

"The fire started underneath a pile of rubble in a section that had previously burned," Mendoza said. More

...so called "renewable energy" is a trivial failure that has done nothing to address extreme global heating.

So called "renewable energy" is a failure. Of course, I do understand that the fossil fuel industry in its successful effort to greenwash itself claims to support so called "renewable energy," since it's good for their business.

Through decades of hype, including the dangerous and stupid rhetoric about "green hydrogen," which is so trivial as to not matter a whit, being just this side of nonexistent, the only result has been to entrench fossil fuels.

From time to time, we hear here, bullshit about "hydrogen in Germany," including bullshit in which the Germans build gas plants that they say will run on hydrogen some day, even though they have no clue about whence the energy to make this hydrogen will come. We also hear from the fossil fuel greenwashing squad trying to rebrand fossil fuels as "green" about "hydrogen in Germany" accompanied with slick marketing videos clearly financed by fossil fuel interests.

The reality of German antinuke so "renewable energy" schemes is reported in a recent news item:

German Coal Power Output at One-Year High Amid Low Wind Speeds

"Renewable energy" in Germany hasn't led to a hydrogen nirvana. It's led instead to killing people by burning coal.

The planet is burning because of the success of fossil fuel marketing, whether it comes in the form of scientifically illiterate attacks on nuclear energy, like say, tritium releases at Fukushima, or pretending that hydrogen is "green," when all it does is to destroy the exergy of its fossil fuel sources.

That's reality. Carrying on about batteries, which unlike hydrogen, and somewhat regrettably at grid scale, are in wide use and industrially a major form of power, will not change the fact.

I certainly don't support grid scale batteries - because I'm not a dumb shit in denial of the laws of thermodynamics - but scaremongering about them certainly doesn't suggest anyone support an even worse scheme to hype the useless so called "renewable energy" - hydrogen - is a better idea. Both ideas suck, just like the wind and solar industries suck, not just in California, but everywhere.

Support for a hydrogen economy is a 50 year old line of bullshit exactly equivalent to the idea that a wind and solar economy is a 50 year old line of bullshit.

Have a nice weekend.
