The S.S. United States, the fastest liner ever to cross the Atlantic, has been moored in Philadelphia for nearly three decades. Eventually, officials plan to deliberately sink the vessel off the coast of Florida, where it will become the worlds largest artificial reefa fate thats been delayed once again.
This is a large project and requires multiple steps to ensure a safe move, as Nick Tomecek, a public information officer for Floridas Okaloosa County (which purchased the liner) tells CNNs Danny Freeman. Okaloosa County is working in collaboration with federal, state and local agencies to ensure a safe move of the ship that includes requests from the Coast Guard.
The S.S. United States is a nearly 1,000-foot-long passenger liner completed in 1951. Made mostly of lightweight aluminum, she was built for speed. The ships maiden voyage from New York to Cornwall, England, in 1952 broke the record for the fastest transatlantic round trip ever saileda title the vessel holds to this day.
You cant set her on fire, you cant sink her and you cant catch her, as William Francis Gibbs, the ships designer, once said, according to the S.S. United States Conservancy, a nonprofit that previously owned the ship.

(2,394 posts)I can't believe some billionaire didn't buy it to fix it up. Or it could have been refurbished to make an excellent museum. I'll miss seeing it in Philly. It was parked right next to the IKEA parking lot. And it's crazy that still holds the transatlantic speed record!

(11,625 posts)I would think they would salvage it.......................especially with Trump declaring tariff's on Aluminum coming into the country, and us not really able to produce it at this point..............
What ever happened to Moscow Mitch's bragging about a foreign country coming to Kentucky to build a massive Aluminum foundry..........which would employ thousands of workers.....
