The country in South America that will have the first hydrogen -driven train: it will have China technology

Chile has taken an important step in the field of railway innovation by presenting the first hydrogen train in South America. This project, promoted by the Antofagasta Railroad to Bolivia (FCAB) in collaboration with the Chinese company CRRC Ziyang, marks a milestone in the decarbonization of rail transport in the region.
The locomotive, specifically designed to operate on mining routes,
seeks to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and optimize energy efficiency in cargo transport. This advance underlines Chiles commitment to sustainability and technological progress in the railway sector.
The locomotive will initially operate on a journey that connects the FCAB facilities in Antofagasta with the port, transporting part of the 7 million tons of copper and other materials that Chile mobilizes annually. This project is part of the National Sustainability Strategy, aimed at positioning the country as a leader in the use of renewable energy and clean technologies.

The hydrogen train in Chile is
part of a broader strategy to achieve sustainability objectives. This means of transport is designed to operate in extreme conditions, such as the Chilean northern deserts and mountains, where the
electrification of the roads is expensive and unfeasible. According to José Luis Adasme, Chief of Engineering of the FCAB, the locomotive is equipped with 20 hydrogen cylinders and can travel up to 166 kilometers in a single route...more
