Doctors must face significant financial consequences from going on strike, the head of the NHS warned as the government aimed to destroy their ability to mount a protracted wave of industrial action.
Sir Jim Mackey, the chief executive of NHS England, told hospital leaders to press on with routine operations after hopes of a deal collapsed in acrimony. He said that the NHS would take a different approach and be much more resistant to the demands of doctors than it has been in the past.
At 7am on Friday resident doctors who were previously known as junior doctors will begin five days of industrial action in a move that NHS leaders have warned will put patients at significant risk.
Doctors insist a pay rise is needed to stop staff deserting the NHS and say they are ready for years of strikes if ministers do not compromise.
