Ordinance changing election dates to appear on Saint Marys ballot

SAINT MARYS, W.Va. (WTAP) - Voters in Saint Marys will vote on an ordinance that would change when the city conducts municipal elections going forward.

The ordinance would require municipal elections to be held biennially on the second Tuesday in May, starting in 2028.

Under the proposed ordinance, the mayor and other officials elected this June and in the June 2025 election will serve five year terms, meaning their office will be up for reelection in even number years, coinciding with the proposed election schedule.

Whether the ordinance passes or not, municipal elections across the state must be amended to coincide with statewide elections by 2032 thanks to a new law approved by the state legislature earlier this year.
