Snohomish County considers zoning changes to address day care shortage

The Snohomish County Council is considering a zoning ordinance that would allow for more day care centers and simplify the permitting process.

The proposal would open rural residential and urban commercial zones for day care centers, as well as areas with arterial roads in unincorporated parts of the county.

“Previously the map was very limited and this ordinance opens it up,” said Nate Nehring, one of the councilmembers who backed the ordinance.

The scarcity of affordable child care options is a problem across the country, impacting around 14 million working parents, according to a study conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
