Constantine looms over Sound Transit process to select next CEO

The political intrigue was palpable Tuesday when the Sound Transit's executive committee convened a special meeting and went into executive session to discuss CEO applicants.

Members chose an unnamed finalist, "Candidate C," to replace former CEO Julie Timm, who left in early 2024 after around 17 months. Some committee members will negotiate an employment contract for full board consideration on March 27.

With lame duck King County Executive Dow Constantine one of the finalists, this has been no ordinary selection process. He chaired the Sound Transit board until recently and is on the executive committee, which voted to enter into contract talks with Candidate C. Constantine, who reportedly recused himself from discussions, was mum during the roll call.

Executive committee members talked about the importance of having a leader who can complete the Everett-to-Tacoma light rail spine and continue to expand and maintain Sounder commuter rail and ST Express services.
