Two rescued from Puget Sound after Edmonds ferry diverted

EVERETT — An Edmonds-Kingston ferry was diverted Saturday as first responders pulled two sailors from the water in a rescue captured on video.

Members of the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office marine unit pulled the two people, a man and a woman, out of the water around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The two were brought to Swedish Edmonds hospital, according to South County Fire, one in serious condition and another with non-life threatening injuries. Both were wearing life jackets.

The Suquamish ferry diverted toward Possession Point just after 11 a.m., Washington State Ferries spokesperson Dana Warr wrote in an email. Diverting ferries for water rescues is not uncommon, Warr said.

“We had dozens of rescues last year diverting from normal operations to save more than 100 people,” Warr wrote Monday. “We typically see more incidents with people in the water that need rescuing during the summer months to include lost divers, wind surfers, flipped kayakers and large recreational vessels capsizing or sinking.”
