Starbucks to lay off 1,100 employees amid turnaround plan

Starbucks is laying off hundreds of corporate employees, CEO Brian Niccol said Monday.

The Seattle coffee giant is shedding 1,100 jobs, in addition to several hundred more open positions, as the company tries to turn around its lagging financial performance. All impacted employees will be notified by Tuesday afternoon.

"We are simplifying our structure, removing layers and duplication and creating smaller, more nimble teams," Niccol said in a letter to employees ."Our intent is to operate more efficiently, increase accountability, reduce complexity and drive better integration."

Starbucks employs about 16,000 non-barista employees worldwide, including workers in roasting facilities and distribution centers. More than 3,500 corporate employees are based at its Sodo headquarters and other regional offices. It's unclear how many local workers will be impacted.

These employees are not responsible for the financial performance. Senior management should have a reduction in pay of 100%.
