Low voter turnout projected in Midland's Nov. 4 election

MIDLAND, Texas — You would think that with the seat for mayor up for grabs, voters would be running to the polls. But Midland County Elections Administrator Rosa Olgin says without a federal issue on the ballot, many people choose to stay home.

“Early voting has been a little bit slow," said Olgin. "We have not had quite as many voters as we were anticipating that we would have, but it’s not unusual for these odd-number years to have a low voter turnout.”

So far, fewer than 5,000 of the Tall City’s nearly 90,000 registered voters have cast a ballot. Olgin expects that number to rise by about 40% on Election Day. But even then, it would still fall short of the roughly 59,000 from last November.

“I’m not super well-informed about my local politics," said Midland resident Chaz Shuey, "I really am not a strong voter. I did vote last year for 2024 because of the political climate. I felt like there was a lot more at stake.”
