2.5 mills police levy to appear on Cortland ballots in November

CORTLAND, Ohio (WKBN) — In Trumbull County, voters in Cortland will see an additional levy benefiting the police department on their ballots this November.

Voters in Cortland will be deciding on an additional 2.5 mills levy for the city’s police department.

“It’s really of critical importance to us,” said Cortland Chief of police David Morris. “We’re simply asking them to help us continue to provide them with a great service.”

The levy would generate $524,000 a year for the department — money that would help offset the department’s rising operational costs plus hire two more full-time officers.

While the goal may be laudable, I disagree with these taxing authorities set by referendums.

A lack of accountability by city leaders.

(from a similar article about another taxing referendum/authority.)

from the article::::: An operational referendum provides school districts additional, voter approved, tax levy authority.

While the goal may be laudable, I disagree with these taxing authorities set by referendums. Every taxing authority should be set by one entity, City council/commission or whatever. If you have 3 extra taxing authorities and each one increases your taxes by 3%, each one can say: well we did not increase your taxes by 9%. It is a matter of accountability. I would prefer one taxing authority that is accountable.

The schools and other purposes should go to the one entity.
