Trial begins over North Carolina election district maps controversy in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A trial has started in Winston-Salem to address allegations of unfair district mapping in North Carolina’s legislative and congressional boundaries.

Two federal lawsuits brought by voters and advocacy groups allege that lawmakers unfairly reduced Black voting power when creating the 2023 district maps. These maps, according to the lawsuits, helped Republicans retain majorities in Raleigh and Washington.

However, Republican mapmakers argue that they did not use racial data when drawing the plans.

The trial is expected to last a month as both sides present their case.
